1. Sharing your password with ANYONE including family or friends actually VIOLATES the Terms of Service (TOS) of companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, etc. By sharing passwords, you risk being BANNED from these sites.
The American Bar Association advises that you can't legally login to online accounts whether or not you have the passwords and usernames if the TOS governing the account prohibit it. Some online accounts specify that only the original user may access the user’s online account, "even when the original user is deceased."
2. Many companies will delete your digital life after an inactivity period of time that is set by default. You can, however, easily and quickly change these settings.
3. Many companies will NOT allow cash rewards, loyalty points and airline miles to be transferred to ANYONE after an account owner's death. We will advise our clients about these rules and endeavor to update them if the rules change.
4. You can designate Legacy (facebook) or Trusted Contacts (Google) online. Many sites are now creating plans for accounts to be transferred due to an incapacity or death. Friends and family will then be able to access your digital assets if something happens to you. We help our clients setup and organize a plan.
5. It can take months to legally obtain access to someone's digital assets if they're unable to manage their own affairs, become incapacitated or die.
